Publicizing vs. Administering Facebook Promotions

The big distinction that Facebook makes in their Promotions Guidelines is between publicizing and administering a promotion on Facebook (this applies to contests & sweepstakes only). Publicizing a promotion means that you promote, advertise or reference a promotion in Facebook, but you do not collect entries or draw or notify winners in Facebook. Administering a promotion means you both publicize it and collect entries in Facebook.

Publicizing a Promotion (doesn't need Facebook approval)

Publicizing a Promotion means that you promote, advertise or reference a promotion in Facebook (e.g. via an ad or creative banner on a fan page), but you do not collect entries or draw or notify winners in Facebook or on the Facebook Platform. Wildfire provides you with an easy solution for publicizing a promotion in Facebook – using our application you can easily build a creative banner that displays on your Facebook fan page, but when a user clicks on this creative, they will be taken off of Facebook and the Facebook platform to a Wildfire-hosted webpage (which you can embed in your website) where the promotion is administered. In this way you do not need to seek special permission from Facebook. For larger brands and agencies we recommend fully administering your promotion in Facebook (i.e. having the entire process of entering the promotion and colleting data happen inside Facebook) because this will lead to better conversions, but this will require you to seek permission from your Facebook ad rep. If you do not have an ad rep or you are unsure about this process, please contact us. For smaller businesses and agencies we recommend publicizing your promotion in Facebook but administering it outside of Facebook (as described above) because this does not require you to seek permission from a Facebook ad rep. Whether you wish to fully administer your promotion in Facebook or simply publicize it, our solution enables you to have a promotion up and running within minutes.

Administering a Promotion (needs Facebook approval)

Administering a promotion means you both publicize it and collect entries in Facebook. To administer a promotion in Facebook you must first get permission from your Facebook sales rep. By default, the Wildfire platform enables you to publicize your promotion in Facebook and then we automatically redirect entrants outside of Facebook to complete the entry form. For most companies this is a highly effective solution. However, if you wish to administer your entire promotion in Facebook please read our tutorial about how to get approval. Please note that, even if your campaign has been approved by a Facebook rep, you may not under any circumstances use the Facebook platform to get in touch with campaign participants. This includes sending Facebook messages to notify your winners.
