NOTE: You don't need to be a technical genius to follow this tutorial. Anyone with basic computer knowledge can setup a custom stream story for campaigns run on the Wildfire platform.

Before you start reading this page you should check out the general information about the Custom Stream Stories feature on our Overview: Custom Stream Stories page. If you have done that already then continue to read.

IMPORTANT: With the Custom Stream Stories feature you obtain great flexibility in customizing your Facebook Stream Stories. However, with more freedom comes more responsibility! When you customize a Facebook Stream Story you HAVE TO COMPLY to the Facebook Stream Story Guidelines. If you do not comply to these guidelines Facebook and/or Wildfire will shut down your campaign immediately WITHOUT ANY REFUNDS!

STEP 1: Go to Your Custom Streams Tab

Login to your Wildfire account and go to the Custom Streams sub tab which is located in the Manage Branding tab. Click on Get Started to setup your custom stream story.

STEP 2: Customize Your Stream Stories

Give your stream story a name in the Stream Story Name field (see screenshot below). You can freely choose this name because it serves as your internal reference point. The best is to use something descriptive, e.g. Pepsi Spring Sale Coupon Stream so you can easily identify your custom stream story in Step 3 of this tutorial.

For the coupon campaign format, there are two different types of Facebook stream stories: (2.1) a stream story that gets triggered when a consumer redeems the coupon, and (2.2) a stream story that consumers and Facebook Page owners can push into their Profile or Fan Page Walls with the Facebook Publisher feature.

STEP 2.1: Customize Stream Story That Users Can Publish When They Redeem Your Coupon

Choose one of the following options from the drop-down menu under the Stream Story Type label to customize the stream story that users can publish when redeeming your coupon (see screenshot below):

  • Coupons - stream story when user gets coupon

Now you are ready to customize your stream story in the subsequent fields. You can write your own text (as long as it complies to the Facebook Stream Story Guidelines) and use so-called Markers to add dynamic content and links to your stream story. For example, if you input the [*campaign_name*] marker into your custom stream story it will automatically place the coupon name you created in the setup wizard into that marker.

Available Markers

Below is a list of available markers that you can use to customize your stream stories. The description next to the grey marker defines what the marker does if you use it in your stream story.

  • [*details_url*]: inputs the URL of your campaign details page.
  • [*new_entry_url*]: inputs the URL of your entry form page.
  • [*company_name*]: inputs the account owner company name.
  • [*sponsor_name*]: inputs the campaign sponsor company name.
  • [*campaign_name*]: inputs your campaign name.
  • [*prize*]: inputs the brief description of your grand prize.
  • {*actor*}: inputs the first and last name of the Facebook user who redeems your coupon.

Important Notes

  • HTML/FBML is not rendered by Facebook and thus not possible to use within streams
  • {*actor*} is only possible in Subtitle and needs curly brackets instead of square brackets
  • Call-to-actions are only allowed for Action Link Text (Facebook Developer Policy VI.B.6)
  • Title URL and Action Link URL can be any link

STEP 2.2: Customize Stream Story for the Publisher Feature

Choose the following option from the drop-down menu under the Stream Story Type label to customize the stream story that Facebook users or Fan Page owners can publish to their Profile or Fan Page Wall via the Facebook Publisher feature:

  • Coupons - stream story for Facebook Fan Page publisher
  • Coupons - stream story for Facebook Wall publisher

As the two options indicate, if you want to customize the stream story for the Facebook Publisher feature on a Facebook Fan Page then choose the Fan Page Publisher option otherwise choose the Wall Publisher option.

Important Notes

STEP 3: Link the Stream Story to Your Campaign

Once you have finished creating your custom stream stories go to the Manage Campaigns tab and click on the campaign you want to link your custom stream stories to. In the campaign wizard click on the Publish tab. In the Facebook channel click on the Streams link and from the drop-down menu choose from the custom stream(s) you created. Click on the Save button. Repeat Step 3 for the widget & microsite channels if you also want to link your custom streams stories to your Facebook Connect-integrated website widget and/or microsite.
